What We Check During a Brake Inspection

Every complimentary SAF-T Digital Vehicle Inspection includes a visual check of brake-pad thickness. If you report a brake concern or the technician identifies one, we also perform a targeted Digital Brake Inspection alongside the normal inspection.

During the targeted inspection, the technician measures the brake pads and records the results on the DVI:

• More than 5 mm: Green
• 4 mm to 5 mm: Yellow
• 3 mm or less: Red

The technician also inspects the rotors for rust, scoring, grooves, and other damage. Rotor condition and wear patterns can help identify problems involving a caliper, caliper slide, bracket, brake hose, or another part of the system.

Brake Pads, Rotors, and Related Components

Some vehicles need brake pads. Others need pads and rotors, or attention to another part of the braking system. The correct repair depends on measured wear, component condition, vehicle specifications, and whether another problem contributed to the wear.

If rust, scoring, grooves, or other damage is present, SAF-T recommends rotor replacement. If a rotor appears suitable for continued service, the technician measures it and determines whether it can be machined while remaining within specification or should be replaced. SAF-T machines qualifying rotors and drums in-house using an Ammco brake lathe.

If you report brake pulsation and SAF-T verifies that the rotors are the cause, we replace the rotors rather than machining them. Uneven wear is investigated to determine whether the cause involves a caliper, caliper slide, bracket, brake hose, or another component.

Replacing the visibly worn part without correcting the underlying condition can allow the original problem to return. We identify the appropriate scope of work and explain it before you authorize the repair.

After the brake repair, the vehicle receives a burnishing road test. A QC technician then performs a separate quality-control road test.

What Affects the Cost of a Brake Job?

There is no single brake-job price that applies to every vehicle because the required work depends on what the inspection finds. The final cost may be affected by:

• The vehicle’s year, make, model, and braking-system design
• Whether the front, rear, or all four wheels require service
• Brake-pad, rotor, or drum condition
• Whether qualifying rotors or drums can be machined
• Caliper, slide, bracket, hose, hydraulic, or parking-brake concerns
• Corrosion, seized components, or uneven wear
• Parts specifications and applicable warranty coverage

An advertised price or another estimate may cover a different scope of work. SAF-T documents the vehicle’s condition and provides an estimate for the recommended repair before you authorize it. This allows you to compare the complete repair rather than only the headline price.

Signs Your Brakes Should Be Checked

Have your brakes inspected if you notice:

• Squealing, grinding, scraping, or another new brake noise
• Vibration or pulsation while braking
• A change in brake-pedal feel
• Increased stopping distance
• Pulling to one side while braking
• A brake or ABS warning light
• A burning smell or unusual heat near a wheel
• Visible fluid leakage or another sudden change in braking behavior

If braking changes suddenly or the vehicle does not feel safe to drive, do not continue driving. Move the vehicle to a safe location if possible and arrange appropriate assistance. SAF-T accepts brake emergencies for evaluation.

Does SAF-T offer a brake warranty? Most eligible parts and labor are covered by SAF-T’s 3-year or 36,000-mile limited warranty. Eligible brake pads installed by SAF-T also include a lifetime friction-material guarantee. Labor and other parts are not included in the lifetime pad guarantee unless separately covered.
